A hearing Tuesday to determine the fate of Evans School was called off at the last moment, as the city and the owner instead met to begin hammering out a schedule to make repairs to the landmark.

The city's department of community planning and development had ordered Richard Eber, who with his brother, Alan, bought the school in 1974, to show why he had missed a Jan. 31, 2004, deadline to fix up the interior and exterior of the deteriorating building at 1115 Acoma St.
By Feb. 26, an agreement must be worked out that includes both scope and timeline for repairs, Assistant City Attorney Kerry Buckey said after the meeting. He added that not going to court over the issue of compliance and hazardous conditions - with the potential for fines and condemnation - would speed the process of getting the building in shape.
Buckey said the agreement could require that by March 2005, Eber would need to repair the exterior and bring the first floor to a level where it could be occupied. For years, neighbors in the Golden Triangle and preservationists have complained about the condition of the property.
Eber said Tuesday the city and the mayor's office "had pledged terrific support."
